on 02nd August 2024 at B. L. D. E. Association’s S. B. Arts and K. C. P. Science College, Vijayapur. One Day State Level Hands on Workshop on Exploring Mushroom Diversity: From Forest Floors to Mastering Cultivation brought together mycologists, researchers, students and enthusiasts interested in the study of macrofungi, that produce large visible fruiting bodies of different morpho-structures. The event was designed to deliberate upon current state of macrofungal diversity, importance of macrofungi in ecosystems, conservation efforts, human culture, and industry and the latest techniques, challenges, and opportunities in mushroom cultivation. Here are some key takeaways of the event:
Take away from the event:
The workshop convened a distinguished assemblage ofdelegates from various research institutions to learn, varied diversity of macrofungi, including rare and endemic species, their distribution across different ecosystems, ecological roles, such as their involvement in nutrient cycling, decomposition, and symbiotic relationships with plants.
Dr. Syed Abrar, Resource personof the workshop disseminated his findings on macrofungi, including new species discoveries, genetic studies and monitoring techniques. The insights was vital for advancing scientific knowledge and informing conservation policies. The deliberation also addressedon the threats to macrofungal diversity, including habitat destruction, climate change, pollution, overharvesting, and strategies for conservation and sustainable use.
The event was dedicated to the execution of inventories andmonitoring programs to assess the diversity, distribution, and population trends of macrofungal species. The data was very essential for targeted conservation actions, establishing and maintaining protected areas / reserves and conservation areas, which helps to safeguard habitats from destruction and degradation. The discourse laid the foundation for the guidelines, needs to be implemented for sustainable harvesting of edible and medicinal macrofungi that can prevent overexploitation, ensuring the long-term survival of macrofungi.
The workshop incorporated interactive practical training session wherein the students and fanatics acquired knowledge on various techniques and methodologies for mushroom cultivation, including substrate preparation, spawn production, management of fruiting body, and diseases & pests, proper harvesting techniques and post-harvest handling covering both traditional and modern cultivation methods, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of each.
One Day State Level Hands on Workshop on Exploring Mushroom Diversity: From Forest Floors to Mastering Cultivationfunctions as a pivotal forumfor sharing knowledge, fostering collaboration, promoting conservation and sustainable use of macrofungi and advancement of mushroom cultivation practices. The event underscored the significance of macrofungiin both natural and human-managed ecosystems and featured the need for continued research and action to protect their diversity and benefits of continuous learning and innovation in this field to meet the growing demand for mushrooms and to contribute to food security and sustainable agriculture.
