Workshop on Developing Basic Psychological Skills for Managing Psychological Issues of Medical Students

The workshop on “Developing Basic Psychological Skills for Managing Psychological Issues of Medical Students” was conducted on January 27, 2025, by the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Faculty of Medical Sciences, KBN University, in collaboration with the Department of Psychology, School of Behavioral Sciences, Central University of Karnataka, Kadaganchi. The event was specifically designed to address the growing concerns regarding the mental health and well-being of medical students—issues that are often overlooked despite the significant psychological challenges they face due to the rigorous demands of academic and clinical training.


The workshop aimed to equip medical students with essential psychological tools and coping strategies to manage stress, anxiety which are common issues among medical professionals. These challenges often arise from high academic expectations and an overwhelming workload, which can negatively impact studentsmental health. Recognizing these concerns, the workshop was done to raise awareness and build psychological stamina to help students effectively manage these pressures.


The key modules of the workshop included:

  1. Substance Abuse Prevention

  2. Trauma & PTSD

  3. Suicide Prevention

  4. Psychological First Aid

  5. Crisis Intervention

  6. Family Support

  7. Mental Health Stigma Reduction

  8. Stress Management

 

The event featured a series of interactive sessions and discussions, organized into 8 groups. Each group consisted of around 15 medical students and was led by 3 facilitators and student observers from Central University of Karnataka. The facilitators used experiential learning techniques, like role plays and group work, to practice psychological interventions. Each session lasted approximately 120 minutes. These sessions provided valuable insights into stress management techniques, mindfulness practices, and methods to enhance emotional strength. Students were introduced to practical tools for managing anxiety, improving focus, and enhancing self-care, much required for maintaining mental health throughout their personal and professional life.


In addition, the workshop focused on promoting open discussions about mental health within the medical field, where stigma often prevents students from seeking help. The sessions provided a safe space for participants to openly share their challenges and experiences.


By the end of the workshop, medical students had acquired valuable knowledge and skills for managing psychological issues in both clinical and community settings.


The initiative marked an important step toward enhancing the overall well-being of medical students, ensuring they are better equipped to handle the emotional and psychological demands of their future careers. The workshop concluded with an emphasis on the continued availability of mental health support and resources, encouraging students to prioritize their psychological well-being and seek help when needed.


This collaboration between KBN University and the Central University of Karnataka highlighted the importance of the efforts in addressing the mental health needs of students in academic fields.

 

THE VALEDICTORY FUNCTION

The Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology at Khaja Bandanawaz University in collaboration with the Department of Psychology, School of Behavioral Sciences, CUK, organized a workshop on "Developing Basic Psychological Skills for Managing Psychological Issues of Medical Students" on January 27, 2025.


The event commenced at 4:15 PM with a brief introduction by Dr. Syeda Safura Fatima, Tutor, Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, who initiated the program with a recitation from the Holy Quran, setting a solemn tone for the event. The anchor then introduced the Dignitaries on the dais.


Dr. Zama Moosvi, Professor & Head I/C of the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, thanked Almighty God and the Patrons of KBN University and extended a warm welcome to Mr. Mir Vilayat Ali, Registrar, KBNU; Dr. Guruprasad KY, Dean, FOMS-KBNU; Prof. Vijyendra Pandey, HOD, Department of Psychology, CUK; HODs of various departments; MBBS Phase III Part I students; and CUK students.


Dignitaries, including Mr. Mir Vilayat Ali, Registrar, KBNU; Dr. Guruprasad KY, Dean, FOMS-KBNU; and Prof. Vijyendra Pandey, HOD, Department of Psychology, CUK, were felicitated during the event.


Prof. Vijyendra Pandey, HOD, Department of Psychology, CUK, delivered a short lecture highlighting the significance of the workshop and commended Dr. Zama Moosvi for collaborating with the Department of Psychology, CUK, to organize this event.


Dr. Guruprasad KY, Dean, FOMS-KBNUemphasised the importance of mental well being and appreciated the efforts by both departments.


Mr. Mir Vilayat Ali, Registrar of KBNU, addressed the gathering and stated that if a person knows their purpose in life and follows it, they will not have any psychological issues or stress.


Dr. Abdul Raheman Idga, Tutor, Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, expressed gratitude to the guests of honour, organizers, and attendees for their participation and contributions to the success of the event.


The event concluded with a high tea.

The workshop on "Developing Basic Psychological Skills for Managing Psychological Issues of Medical Students" proved to be a valuable initiative by the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, FOMS, KBN University. It provided students with valuable knowledge and skills for managing psychological issues in both their personal and professional lives.
